Java Version Market Share: January 2012

by on February 6, 2012

Over the last few months we have been tracking the change in usage between Java 6 and the lastest version, Java 7. Since you have the ability to choose within Jelastic the version of Java that you want, we thought you might want to know what other developers out there are choosing. We’ve had about four months to track these changes, so here are the numbers.

Though usage of Java 6 remains quite a bit higher than Java 7, Java 7 has been growing.

And now, American and European developers are using the different versions at about the same rate. When we looked at these stats before, there was a bit of discrepancy in what developers in the US and EU preferred. Seems like that has leveled out now though.

Here are the statistics in table format:

Java 7

Below is a chart showing the changes in usage over the last 4 months. You’ll see that Java 7 usage grew from October to November; then dropped down a bit in December before going back up this last month.

We’ll continue to keep posted with our monthly updates. If you are considering changing what version of Java you are using, we hope you found this useful.

Cheers!
