In this week’s newsletter, we have updates on Java version usage, a new how-to for a DMS in the Cloud and a preview of what’s in store. Let’s get to it!
Well, we have been tracking the uptake of Java 7 here at Jelastic over the last few months because we figure you might want to know what everyone one else is doing.
So, as of March 1st, Java 7 now has a 18% share of the Java pie usage within Jelastic. Java 6 continues to have the lion’s share, with 82%. But, if you look at the trends over the last few months–which you can see here–you will notice that the Java 7 usage has grown, just not very fast: which is most likely the reason that the EOL for Java 6 was extended 4 months, all the way to November 2012.
What’s that mean? You can take your time moving over to Java 7, but might as well start planning it. Talk of Java 8 is already growing.
xinco DMS is the solution we chose to highlight as we deployed it to the Jelastic Cloud. xinco can handle files, text, URLs and contacts, featuring ACLs, version control, full text search and an FTP-like client. All of these things make it quite powerful and very popular.
You can read our how-to on deploying it to Jelastic here.
We have a number of upcoming things that you can keep an eye out for. We still have to put our OpenCF Summit summary up (open-source is huge and it’s only growing); we have a whole slew of how-to’s coming; we have more PaaS comparisons on the way, like Jelastic vs DotCloud and Jelastic vs CloudFoundry; and of course, we’ll continue to have your weekly dose of Friday humor to get you ready for the weekend.
If there is anything that you would like us to cover, or something that you think the Jelastic community could benefit from, please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can always find us on Twitter or Facebook.
