Java Hosting Platform, Jelastic, Delivers More Performance and Efficiency
Addition of popular open source web server NGINX adds caching and load-balancing
WILMINGTON, Del., October 26, 2011 – Jelastic, a next-generation platform?as?a?service (PaaS) offering that runs any Java application in the cloud without code changes, announced today the addition of NGINX, the second-most popular open source web server in the world – giving customers greater performance and efficiency for their applications. Using NGINX requires no extra deployment steps or pre-configuration.
NGINX offers built-in Layer 7 load balancing and content caching to provide a cost-effective and highly available platform for hosted applications. NGINX delivers 10 times greater performance on existing hardware — combined with scalability, security and high efficiency in memory and CPU — making it the fastest web server in the world. With a market share of 8.5 percent across all domains, NGINX powers 43 million domains and nearly 25 percent of the top 1,000 busiest websites including Facebook, Zappos, Groupon, TechCrunch, Dropbox, LivingSocial, WordPress and Hulu.
“Our customers need a Java cloud computing platform that creates the highest level of availability and efficiency for their applications,” said Ruslan Synytsky, CEO, Jelastic. “Adding NGINX as part of our technology stack provides those capabilities.”
Jelastic enables Java applications to be uploaded in minutes without changes to code or programming language and with no need to write for specific APIs (application programming interfaces). Application developers can choose which stack components they want and need, and their application will run and scale easily on the Jelastic platform.
“I’m very glad to see NGINX now readily available to millions of Java developers in preconfigured hosting environments,” said Igor Sysoev, author of NGINX and an advisor to Jelastic. “Jelastic creates new opportunities for existing and new Java hosting offerings and it is great news for developers that NGINX is now part of it.”
Jelastic supports any JVM-based application including pure Java 6 or 7, JRuby, Scala and Groovy. The Jelastic beta supports these SQL databases: MariaDB, MySQL, and PostgreSQL. Non-SQL database support is provided for MongoDB and CouchDB. Supported application servers include Tomcat 6 and 7, GlassFish and Jetty. Jelastic provides load balancing and caching through integrated NGINX software, and developer tools integration via Maven and Ant plug-ins.
Jelastic is also different from earlier Java PaaS offerings in that it will be available to Java developers through a global network of hosting service providers – which already includes ServInt in the U.S. and Host Europe for Europe.
Jelastic has been in test since mid-2011 with more than 1,500 registered developers and nearly 1,000 applications deployed. Java is the programming language of choice used by nine million Java developers worldwide.

From its earliest inception, NGINX has been driven by an understanding that Internet usage would explode with an increasing expectation of instant response from online services. NGINX was designed to enable the companies to adjust to this new reality of heavy internet consumption without incurring unnecessary costs in capital investments or time.
NGINX has grown organically over the past 10 years of development thanks to the vision of Igor Sysoev and the enthusiasm and support of a loyal community of users and developers.
In July 2011, the company founded its commercial arm, Nginx, Inc. For more information, please visit www.nginx.com.
Jelastic, a startup company establishing headquarters in the U.S., makes the Jelastic Java server hosting platform for Java developers and hosting service providers. Jelastic is the only PaaS offering designed specifically for hosting service providers to deploy and make available to their customers. Jelastic automatically scales Java applications and allocates server resources required by applications.
